Idaho Opportunity Scholarship – applicants must meet the following criteria: (1) have a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or higher (2) be an Idaho resident (3) be a graduate from an Idaho high school or GED from Idaho (4) complete the State Board of Education scholarship application by March1 (5) complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (6) maintain satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes. The Elks National Foundation – will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2020 competition. Awards range from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify. Male and female students compete separately. Dell Scholars Program – The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation created the Dell Scholars program with the understanding that it takes more than financial help to support students to college graduation. From the start, Dell Scholars was designed as a college completion program that offers support services that go beyond a scholarship check. Today, the Dell Scholars program offers personalized, multifaceted support to Scholars that extends beyond the financial support of $20,000, a laptop, and textbook credits. They offer students and their families’ services and solutions to address individual and systemic issues that can create major barriers to student success. Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce/Agribusiness Scholarship – open to residents of Twin Falls, Gooding, Jerome, Blaine, Camas, Minidoka, Cassia or Lincoln Counties. Selection based on essay response, academic achievement, participation in youth or community service organizations, leadership activities, and interview. Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Committee is devoted to making a difference in our community by supporting the Ag scholarships given out every year to young people continuing their education by attending an Idaho School and working toward an Agricultural based degree. Chobani Scholars Program – the Chobani Scholars program is a multi-year $20,000 scholarship program to support students with family connections to dairy farming and who plan to pursue a career in the dairy farming industry at the University of Idaho. Students who have worked on dairy farms or have immediate family members who work on dairy farms, and who intend to pursue a degree in animal and veterinary science, agricultural economics, or agricultural systems management, are eligible. United States Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Foundation Scholarship – $1,000 grants awarded to graduating high school seniors in the United States, who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. The number of grants awarded annually will be at the discretion of the United States JCI Senate Foundation. They must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study. Checks awarded will be made out in the name of the recipient and the educational institution of their choice. Application at www.usjcisenate.org Deadline: Friday, January 24

The Idaho Governor’s Cup Scholarship – approximately 25 awards, depending on funding, to Idaho high school seniors planning to attend an Idaho college or university. The number of awards is conditional on the availability of funds. Awards will be available to scholars pursuing academic and professional-technical education. This is a $3,000 award, renewable up to four years for academic programs and up to three years for professional-technical programs. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must meet all of the following criteria: (1) be a resident of Idaho (2) be a graduating senior of an Idaho high school (3) enroll as a full-time student in an academic or technical program at an Idaho college or university(and take the ACT or SAT if you are enrolling in an academic program) (4) have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above (5) attend the first semester of college following graduation (6) Write a 500-word personal essay about your goals and interests (7) high consideration for selection will be based on a demonstrated commitment to public service. Documentation of volunteer work, leadership, and public service is required. Idaho Association of Counties Scholarship – six $1000 awards. Students who are eligible to apply for the scholarship are children of county employees who are issued a paycheck by the county that work 20 hours or more per week and the children and grandchildren of county elected officials (assessors, clerks, commissioners, coroners, prosecuting attorneys, sheriff, and treasurer). Recipients must attend a college, university or vocational/technical school full-time for the 2020-21 academic year and be enrolled in either an academic or a vocational education program leading towards a degree or certification. Idaho Irrigation Equipment Association Scholarship – the Idaho Irrigation Equipment Association is pleased to announce that $21,000 in scholarships will be awarded to 35 students for the 2019-2020 school year. Scholarships are awarded to students interested in the irrigation industry. Majors may include: Irrigation Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture, Crop and Soil Sciences, Agribusiness, Landscape Architecture and Design, Agriculture and Horticulture Education. Children of IIEA Members are also encouraged to apply. Applications can be found at www.idahoirrigationequipmentassociation.org

Idaho Power Scholarship for Academic Excellence – provides 10 annual student fee/tuition grants for graduating high school students who live within Idaho Power’s service area. Applicants must have a minimum 3.75 grade point average. The $2,000 annual grants are conditioned upon the recipient’s enrollment at an accredited Idaho or Oregon college, university or vocational-technical school.

Idaho Community Foundation/Erle and Cynthia Byram Scholarship – for students graduating from any high school in southern Idaho (south of the Salmon River) with first preference given to any student who has resided in Gooding or Camas counties for at least one year prior to application. Some scholarships will be based on financial need, while others will be based both on need and academic achievement. Application available online at https://www.idahocf.org/

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

This form is required to determine eligibility for all financial aid provided by the federal government. Most states and colleges also require the FAFSA for state and institutional aid. The FAFSA is a valuable tool. Even parents who don’t think they will qualify for need-based financial aid should consider completing the form; you may be surprised. The federal government has not established a range of eligible/non-eligible income. Refer to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/estimate/ for information regarding FAFSA4caster to help get an early start on the financial aid process.

Filling out the FAFSA is much like filling out a tax form. It requires information regarding income, assets, debts, etc. for the previous year. Students/parents are encouraged to file electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The form must be completed after October 1.

February is already here and it is hard to believe how the year has been flying by. Basketball seasons are coming to an end and I am already hearing talk about track. I really can’t tell by the weather that this is the case because Mother Nature does have a sense of humor.Part of my administrative duties is to travel to all of the sporting events. The IDHSAA made a vocal request that there needed to be a supervisor from each school attending each game to represent their own school. This has come to fruition due to unruly fans and parents. Coming to Hagerman, I was educated by many that there was a bad reputation and stigma that seemed to linger at many for our athletic events. I was educated by our community members, referee’s, and even opposing coaches who seemed to have witnessed the unruliness that took place in prior years.

As I sit at our games, with that education in mind, I really try to take a look around and observe the behavior of our fans and players at our games. I recognize an occasional outburst at what was viewed as a bad call, and I have had to remind a few parents about being supportive of the programs, but I have to say that the education I was given wasn’t what I expected.

Now, 2 years in, I can say that the environment by our community and students has been really good. I’m proud of the student body who stand diligently every game encouraging each team, whether they are winning or losing. I enjoy watching them cheer so loud that it becomes a distraction to the other teams (they have been complimented by the officials for their school spirit). I have a lot of respect for the parents who show up every night to encourage their children, or just show up to encourage their children’s friends. I know that they have busy lives, but they recognize the value of just “showing up.” We have a family that runs our concessions every football and basketball game without fail, weather, or sickness. If that isn’t pride and investment in our athletic environment then I don’t know what is.

I guess in this article I wanted to give a shout out to the community and students who continue to carry the legacy of “the Pirate”. I appreciate the support that you all show to our students and helping with the positive environment that we are trying to portray at our sporting events, even when we feel the officials might have it out for us. It is because of you showing up to all of our games, and being apart of that positive environment, that gives me bragging rights at my meetings. I have witnessed two parents being removed from games this year, and we as a Sawtooth Conference just banned another parent from attending any games due to their behavior and belittling of the officials. I am happy to say that it was not our parents or fans.

Thank you again for “showing up” and providing your positive support to our environment. I have had multiple compliments by previous officials recognizing the change. They like coming to Hagerman to officiate. I hope you always know how much it means to our schools success and the students success that we continue to provide a positive environment of support at our athletic events.

The Hagerman JH/HS PTV have been very busy. They have been doing a great job of helping out our school. They have been apart of BLACK OUT sporting events, dinner for the teachers at PTC, and are working toward getting money for library books. Thank you PTV members for investing in the JH/HS and making a difference in our school.
