Principals Corner

The seasons are changing once again. The smells of Spring and dairy are in the air, which means that Spring Break is right around the corner. Winter didn’t seem too long this year this year, but the wind seems like forever.A good friend of mine gave me a book to read and the first part of the book that stood out to me was “school culture”. So what defines a schools culture? According to the author of this book, school culture is centered around communication. There is even this cool little acronym that says: Communication, Uncovers, Learning, Transparency, Ultimately, Reveals, Everything.

This acronym is a good reminder of how the structure of our school can be successful. It isn’t just something for the school to follow, it includes our community stakeholders. We want the values of Hagerman Jr/Sr School to permeate throughout the community. We want our community to also support our values and changes that we are trying to implement at our school. When the school and the community recognize that decisions are made to benefit all students, I believe that is when our school culture will thrive.

At Hagerman Jr/Sr School we want to continue to educate our families on some of the platforms that the faculty and staff are implementing at the school. We want to continue to work to have our families to be a part of that platform. We want questions. Questions from our community stakeholders on what is being taught in our classrooms, what our curriculum is, how our students are being assessed, what new programs and opportunities are being implemented, how technology at the school is preparing students and how its being used. These are important communication items that we want our community stakeholders to know. This is not information that should be at the school level, but it should be at the community level as well.

The faculty and staff at Hagerman Schools are continually trying new teaching strategies using technology and are always looking to improve themselves as professionals in order to benefit our students. They care about your children and want them to get a quality education. They also need community stakeholders to communicate with them. Ask questions.

When our students succeed in FFA, Athletics, Adobe, Honors Society, BPA, Science Fair, Food Science, it is all part of a unified culture. It brings pride to our school culture. When I see the Fall BBQ (opening social) and see how many people bring their families to eat and enjoy the activities of the school, that strengthens our school culture. There is an genuineness about it that magnifies our school culture.

School culture takes work and we are always working on improvement. It takes ALL stakeholders to make it successful. Thank you community stakeholders, faculty, and staff for striving to create a positive school culture where our students can thrive. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you as I know you share our same vision…….”for the benefit of students”.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

This form is required to determine eligibility for all financial aid provided by the federal government. Most states and colleges also require the FAFSA for state and institutional aid. The FAFSA is a valuable tool. Even parents who don’t think they will qualify for need-based financial aid should consider completing the form; you may be surprised. The federal government has not established a range of eligible/non-eligible income. Refer to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/estimate/ for information regarding FAFSA4caster to help get an early start on the financial aid process.

Filling out the FAFSA is much like filling out a tax form. It requires information regarding income, assets, debts, etc. for the previous year. Students/parents are encouraged to file electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The form must be completed after October 1.
